Erinnerungsorte - Places of Rememberance

The documentary project „Places of remembrance“ realised by Federal Foundation for the reappraisal of communist dictatorships contains more than 6.000 monuments, memorial places and museums. Over 600 of these places are situated in Germany. Here you may find a selection of the most important places of remembrance in Germany.

With regard to political repression in communist East Germany, two time periods need to be taken into account the period of the Soviet Zone of Occupation (1945-1949) and the period of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) with the dictatorship of the Socialist Union Party "SED" from 1949 until 1989.

Border Museums and Memorials

The division of Germany was a result of World War II. Already during the war, the allies (U.S.A., Soviet Union, and Great Britain) had discussed Germany's future fate at the conferences of Teheran and Yalta. In late 1944, the European Advisory Commission agreed upon a line of demarcation that would eventually divide Germany into four zones of occupation and the city of Berlin into four sectors.
