In the historiography of communism in the Federal Republic the Lechleiter Group is assigned to the cross-party anti-fascist resistance. But, in fact, the members of the group pursued the goal of establishing a social order based on the Soviet model (‘Soviet-Germany’). They assumed that in connection with the impending defeat of Germany a political crisis would come about, making the basis for a “proletarian revolution”. To be prepared, the Communist Party should be reorganized, especially in the large factories in Mannheim, and a leadership for the district of Baden-Palatinate should be established. Meanwhile the newspaper Der Vorbote, which was edited by the Lechleiter Group, served as the main organ of information. It was distributed only to reliable Communists, and therefore acted as an information sheet for officials rather than serving as a broad-based newspaper of the resistance. Due to the opening of the files from the archives of the SED Central Committee and the Ministry of State Security of the GDR, to which the independent historical research in the Federal Republic had no access until reunification, a critical examination and presentation of the work of the Lechleiter Group has now become possible.
