What was the role of US foreign policy after the collapse of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989? This essay examines the claim that the US dominated events at the end of 1989 and 1990 and looks, in particular, at whether it caused the democratization of eastern Germany. The evidence presented shows that the United States was in a more reactive role than previously thought and places the emphasis on the actions of local actors.
