Border Museums und Memorials at the Green Belt
For nealy 40 years Europe was divided by the Iron Curtain, creating a border that was more than 8,500 km long. Especially in Germany this borderline manifested itself in walls, barbed wirde, watchtowers and mines. At the same time, however, it meant that for decades nature remained virtually untouched, as a result of which we now have a system of nature preserve of about 1,393 km in Germany alone. It is called the "Green Belt." It offers opportunities for hikes and biking tours in unspoilt nature combined with an exploration of the recent German past when visiting the numerous border memorials and museums along the way.
