This essay looks at board game production in East and West Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. The basis for this research was the collection of the German Games Archive in Nuremberg with roughly 30.000 board games. Although board game production in West Germany started to become very varied and creative, the development in East Germany remained oriented mostly toward traditional board games. The essay highlights the use of board games as intermediaries for political indoctrination. Furthermore the collection of the German Games Archive shows that copies of famous West German board games were published in the GDR under different names and sometimes even with another game author on the game box. The examples presented here show that there was a transfer of games and game ideas between East and West Germany. The article gives also a short overview of research possibilities and board game related institutions in Germany and tries to strengthen the important role of board games as scientific sources for various disciplines.
