The fate of foreign Communists living in the Soviet Union in the 1930s has been recorded many times. This essay asks about the connection between the traumatizing experience of the Stalinist terror and the political assessments and political actions of German Communists who returned after the war to the Soviet Zone of Germany (and later GDR). The ones who survived the terror in the USSR and were allowed to return to Germany after the war, constituted the leadership core of East Germany as an instrument of Soviet occupation. When building the new German Communist state, they repeated all the traumas they had experienced in the Soviet Union: the methods, the enemy constructs, the fear, the terror, the fabricated accusations. Gradually they eliminated their supposed or real opponents within the party, including the Social Democrats, western emigrants, the survivors of the concentration camps, veterans of the International Brigade in Spain, and others. Using persecution and show trials to tighten their grip on the party, they turned the GDR into a Stalinized regime.
