The Communist Party of Germany (KPD) posed a major political challenge to the early Federal Republic after the defeat of Hitler. As a regional branch of the SED, the East German ruling party, it sought to prevent the establishment of the West German state. While contemporaries justified the fight against the KPD during the Cold War as a necessary step to secure liberal democracy, a new critical historiography sees it as part of a suppression of grassroots democratic initiatives after the end of National Socialism. Focusing in particular on industrial enterprises and the urban public sphere, the article argues for a more nuanced examination. The relationship between communism, communists and democracy was far more complex and multifaceted than is often acknowledged. While anti-communism restricted the scope for political action, local and industrial struggles between communists and non-communists also helped to create new spaces and procedures for participatory action and, in the long run, encouraged critical reflection on democratic deficits.
