By the late 1960s, the West German trade union movement had witnessed the development of a protest from below, born out of social tensions in the wake of industrial change. This found expression in a large number of wildcat strikes and a revival of a certain working-class radicalism. At the same time, as part of the new social movements, communist groups entered the factories and tried to use the existing potential for protest for political agitation. The article focuses on the wildcat strike at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard in 1973, in which workers' dissatisfaction with the results of the union's collective bargaining was expressed in a workplace protest that also opened up new forms of participation and alternative concepts of democracy. Through a detailed analysis at the local level, the article sheds light on the constellation of actors in the company and examines the extent to which the communists were able to establish contact with the workers and break through the established mechanisms and structures of the trade union movement.
