Former communists had a difficult time in German social democracy after 1945, but they were of particular importance to the emerging state, party and trade union intelligence services because they had intimate knowledge of communist structures and the people involved. They were therefore predestined to work in the background, as advisors, strategists and networkers. This article focuses on three actors who achieved a certain relevance for the SPD's party building, trade union coordination and covert anti-communist actions between 1945 and 1960: Siegmund (Siggi) Neumann (1907–1960), Eduard (Edu) Wald (1905–1978) and Otto Wollenberg (1898–1973). They all came from a faction within the German Communist Party commonly known as the "conciliators". Their postwar activities and positions cannot be exhaustively described as "anti-communist". Their fascinating biographies were fragile and contradictory, pursuing their own political convictions and ideas of democracy, which were also influenced by their former communist experiences.

Dr. phil. Philipp Kufferath, geb. 1980 in Bonn. 2001 bis 2009 Studium der Mittleren und Neueren Geschichte, Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft sowie Soziologie an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. 2016 Promotion in Göttingen mit einer biografischen Studie, die 2016 mit dem Christian-Gottlob-Heyne-Preis und 2018 mit dem Preis für niedersächsische Landesgeschichte ausgezeichnet wurde. 2016 bis 2019 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Deutschen Sporthochschule in Köln. Seit 2017 Referent im Referat Public History der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung und geschäftsführender Herausgeber des Archivs für Sozialgeschichte (AfS).
