Fields of Work from A-Z

The Foundation’s work is guided by the principles of instigating and supporting, informing and networking. The Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany entertains partnerships with memorial sites, museums, historical societies, independent archives, associations of the victims of Communist dictatorship in East Germany, of federal states as well as local municipalities, of science and political education as well as curricular and extra-curricular educational work, all of whose projects it seeks to support both in terms of content and – if possible – financially

Furthermore, the Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany produces a wide range of informational materials and publications while also providing a platform for cooperation and networking. Through the organisation of panel discussions, workshops and conferences, discussions with contemporary witnesses, colloquia and advanced trainings it promotes debates and generates impulses for further discussion, which then advance the process of study and reappraisal in the form of knowledge transfer, communication and advisory capacities.

The Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany maintains a special library and archive complete with a documentation centre through which books, documents and other materials primarily addressing the key topics of opposition and resistance in the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR, as well as political persecution and repression are made available. This includes a well-resourced publicly accessible reading room. Furthermore, the Federal Foundation’s archive department provides comprehensive advisory services, particularly to archives of the opposition in the GDR.
