The Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany provides a wide range of sources for all those interested in studying the causes, history and impact of the second German dictatorship.

In accordance with its establishment act, the Foundation operates an archive, a library and a documentation centre.

The archive of the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Eastern Germany collects and houses written material and other materials used by the opposition and resistance against the Communist dictatorship in the GDR.

Alongside classic written files, it includes an audio-visual record including photographs, slides, videos, films and sound recordings. Furthermore, the archive houses a broad range of graphic art works and a poster collection.

Library

The Federal Foundationís specialised academic library features publications on the history of opposition and repression under the Soviet occupation, the GDR and throughout the entire erstwhile Communist power bloc. One important focus is placed on publications covering the upheaval of 1989/90, as well as literature on processes of reappraisal and study of Communist dictatorships at a national and international level.

The Documentation Centre of the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Eastern Germany primarily covers the resonance of debates on the East German historical legacy in print media as well as informational material and conference programmes from institutions devoted to the study of Communist dictatorships.
