The Gerda and Hermann Weber Foundation as part of the Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany

Married couple Gerda and Hermann Weber established the non-independent and non-profit foundation in the spring of 2003 under the trusteeship of the Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany.

The Gerda and Hermann Weber Foundation seeks to promote engagement with the history of German and international Communism in the 20th century in academia and political education, while simultaneously contributing to highlighting the causes, history and impact of the Communist dictatorship in East Germany and situating it in the broader history of Communism as a whole. The doyen of historical research on Communism and the GDR in Germany, Mannheim-based contemporary historian Prof Dr Hermann Weber, and his wife Gerda thereby established a foundation through which their life’s work would continue to receive funding in the long term.
