Henningsdorf

Nieder Neuendorf

On the Eastern shores of the River Havel there is the lake Heiligensee, which used to belong to West-Berlin. On the Eastern shores, there is Nieder Neuendorf, which is a part of Hennigsdorf. As the river is particularly narrow here, quite a few East Germans attempted to escape to the West from here between 1961 and 1989. In 1999, on the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a museum opened to the public. It is located in a former watchtower. The documentation focuses on the German division, daily life at the border, the East German border security devices, and various escape attempts. The watchtower has five levels, of which three may be visited. Almost all of the 302 watchtowers have been removed along the 155km of a borderline between West-Berlin and East Germany.
