This article presents, using the Belarussian example, the crucial point of the Soviet agrarian policy – the forced replacement of the private farming by the collective (state-owned) farms (kolkhozes). The analysis is based on the source materials produced by different organs of the communist party and the local administration. Hugely restricted access to the secret police (NKWD/KGB) archives means that these important files can be used by foreign historians only to a very small extent. Most of the sources used here have been analysed for the first time.
