This essay explores women’s ambivalent empowerment in Communist Romania, as reflected in social scientists’ studies about the “women’s condition,” published in the 1960s and 1970s. First, it offers an analysis of the political and expert debates around the adoption, in 1966, of the pronatalist policies that drastically restricted access to abortion in Romania. From the perspective of intellectual history, it asks what high-level policymaking can tell us about the thematic horizon of research on women’s social condition in the 1970s and 1980s. The second part of the study shows how women’s emancipation was articulated as a social issue in terms of (in)equality in research on the “double burden,” and points to the limitations of this approach with regard to women’s reproductive rights. The third section asks how second-wave feminism and globalization addressed concerns about women’s emancipation at the time of the consolidation of the Ceaușescu regime. The study concludes with a sketch of how ideas about women’s condition under Communism transformed toward the end of 1980s, separating the issue of equality from that of freedom.
