Abstract

This essay tells the »grass roots« story of the skateboarders of Dresden in the 1980s. Inspired by the U.S. hip-hop film Beat Street, they »conquered« spaces of the city on their homemade boards. To constrain these rather wild and unruly activities, the skaters of Dresden were accepted into a sports association (Betriebssportgemeinschaft – BSG). Because of the very different cultures of regulated BSG sports, with their fixed hall-access times and training leaders, the integration of the near-punk skaters proved largely infeasible. However, informally, the skateboarders themselves achieved an impressive sporting development and even organised an unofficial GDR championship. Based on interviews with the former skateboarders, the essay interprets their activities using Roger Caillois’s conception of play and games. This approach brings out the fundamental opposition of skateboarders to the Communist state.
