This article looks at two criminal investigations by the East German secret police in the Potsdam district in the mid-1950s and late 1970s. The article discusses the detainees and full-time staff of the Staatssicherheit as well as state institutions, regulations and procedures. Through what actions did the detainees come into the sights of the Staatssicherheit? What experiences and motives determined the behavior of the victims? Which background and behavior shaped the members of the secret police? And what characterized the asymmetrical relationship between inmates and full-time staff of the Staatssicherheit? These questions are addressed in the article, which works out how general political and social developments affected the full-time staff of the Staatssicherheit and how the East German secret police adjusted their tactical approach in order to achieve their strategic goal: securing the SED’s rule.
