This essay investigates the security culture of the East German secret police (the »Stasi«) in the period of late socialism, from the mid-1970s to the dissolution of the security apparatus in 1990. During this time, the Soviet secret police were referred to as »Chekists«, a designation that was also adopted in East Germany; the article thus refers to this term by describing the security culture of the Stasi as »Chekism«. The paper traces the transformation of Chekist discourses in various contexts, including formal and informal narratives about the proper role and ethos of the secret police. Following the collapse of East Germany, the ethos of Chekism lived on, but was shorn of its Communist ideological content as former Stasi personnel took up positions within the security institutions of the reunified German state.
