Abstract

Hendrik Berth/Elmar Brähler/Peter Förster/Markus Zenger/Yve Stöbel-Richter: Erinnerte Repressionserfahrungen in den letzten Jahren der DDR und deren Auswirkungen im Lebensverlauf, in: Jahrbuch für Historische Kommunismusforschung 2023. Berlin: Metropol Verlag, pp. 275–286.

Background: The experience of repression was omnipresent within the last years of the GDR. People engaged in a permanent process of adaptation to avoid sanctions. Thus the article deals with the problem of how people remembered experiences of repression from ending GDR and how this affected their attitudes, opinions and health during the further life course. The article uses data from the Saxon Longitudinal Study (www.wiedervereinigung.de/sls) surveying an identical sample of East Germans (approx. 350 people) since 1987. The participants complete extensive questionnaires about their experience of the East German transformation every year. Remembered experiences of repression were gathered in 2019/2020. 8.9 % of the respondents report on political imprisonment in their family. More than 40 % sensed that they had been observed in their daily life. Not surprisingly, people who remembered more repression are more critical of the GDR and more supportive of German reunification. There are no coherences to mental health in later years of age. The participants of the Saxon Longitudinal Study, who experienced the changes in the GDR in autumn 1989 as 16/17-year-olds, retrospectively report on several experiences of repression, especially the experience of spying. Limitations of the study result in terms of content from the age of the participants at that time and methodologically from the retrospective recording of the experienced repression.
