As the “Cold War” intensified after 1945, the confrontation between the Western powers and the Soviet Union also had consequences for occupied Austria and the intelligence services stationed there. Firstly, main objectives like denazification and the search for war criminals soon became irrelevant, and information gathering and counterintelligence against the “new enemy” became the more important. In this struggle, the British and American intelligence services soon suspected the Austrian Communist Party (KPÖ) of being not only a political ally of the Soviet occupation forces, but also of being an agent of subversion. They observed the actions of the party and its members closely and ran several investigations. Based on the files of the American “Counterintelligence Corps” and the British “Intelligence Organisation”, the article analyses the reasons for and the progress of these investigations and gives insight into how alarmed by this “communist underground” in Austria the American and British secret services were.

Dieter Bacher, Mag. phil, geb. 1981 in Leoben, Österreich. Von 2000 bis 2005 Studium der Geschichte (mit Schwerpunkt Ost- und Südosteuropa) und Slawistik (Russistik) an der Universität Graz. Zurzeit Dissertationsprojekt zu ausländischen Nachrichtendiensten in Österreich während des frühen Kalten Krieges. Seit 2005 Mitglied des »Austrian Center for Intelligence, Propaganda and Security Studies« (ACIPSS) in Graz, seit November 2006 wiss. Mitarbeiter am Ludwig Boltzmann-Institut für Kriegsfolgen-Forschung in Graz, seit 2013 Mitglied der »Baltic Intelligence Studies and Security Association« (BISSA) der Syddansk Universitet in Odense, seit 2015 »Young Science-Botschafter« im Rahmen des »Young Science«-Projektes des Österreichischen Austauschdienstes (OEAD). Forschungsschwerpunkte: Flüchtlinge im Österreich der Besatzungszeit 1945–1955, Aktivitäten ausländischer Nachrichtendienste in Österreich im frühen Kalten Krieg, Zwangsarbeit in Österreich 1939–1945, österreichische Kriegsgefangene in der ehemaligen Sowjetunion.
