Political trials were strongly influenced by the former secret police, „the Stasi“ in the GDR. Some researchers even called the prosecutors the „servants“ of the Stasi. This characterization results from the “stasification“ of history since archives have been opened in 1990. New studies prove, that the influence of the Attorney General (Generalstaatsanwalt) of the former GDR was stronger than hitherto suggested. Joseph Streit, Attorney General from 1962 to 1986, had been a high-ranking official in the SED Central Committee before he came into office. He was a member of “Leiterberatungen der obersten Justiz- und Sicherheitsorgane“. In this committee he and the President of High Court, the Minister of Justice together with members of Stasi and the Ministry of the Interior discussed and decided on the main rules of the juridical system in accordance with the line of the party leaders. From 1973 the Attorney General was even the president of this comittee. To an extent, prosecutors had a modicum of independence to make their own decisions. This method to rule and control justice in the former GDR was secret and not mentioned in any law or constitution up to 1990.

Von 2007 bis 2018 Forschungskoordinator in der dortigen Forschungsabteilung. Ab 2019 Forschungskoordinator an der Europa-Universität Viadrina im Rahmen des BMBG-Forschungsverbunds »Landschaften der Verfolgung«. Ehrenamtlicher Vorsitzender des Aufarbeitungsvereins Bürgerkomitee 15. Januar e.V. und Mitherausgeber des Aufarbeitungsforums H-und-G.info. Rechtshistorische Dissertation 2017: Im Goldenen Käfig.
