The Soviet Union and China signed a treaty of alliance and friendship in 1950, but just thirteen years later, their relationship terminated. In 1963, both sides engaged in public polemics on the “General Line of the International Communist Movement”. A few months previously, high-ranking representatives of the two parties had met for the last time to make the split happen. The Soviet and Chinese officials passionately argued about the Soviet departure from the Stalinist model in all its aspects through the process of de-Stalinization. Scholarship on diplomatic history, however, has dismissed this central episode of Sino-Soviet relations as an insignificant event. The Moscow meeting of July 1963 served as the distorting mirror that Soviet and Chinese party leaders both needed. It allowed them to reassure themselves in the face of the other when debating the reasons for the split and the legacy of de-Stalinization.
